Last week I took a shooting course from Bob Keller of Gamut Resolutions (www.gamutresolutions.com). Bob is retired from U.S. Army Special Operations and I was excited to get some continuing education on shooting as well as see some instructional techniques being used by an elite operator turned instructor. I was curious to get a glimpse behind the curtain to see some of the tactics and techniques trained by one of the elites of the elite. I was not disappointed. This was absolutely one of the best shooting schools that I have ever attended.
I was amazed at the amount of material we covered and level of instruction. Without a doubt, I was a better shooter at 5 pm Tuesday than I was at 9 am the day before. What is the key to success, the reason for improvement in two days of shooting, the secret sauce so to speak from this elite Special Forces operator? The answer is so simple. The keys are fundamentals, safety, and repetition to build muscle memory.
In a previous interview with “The Gun Writer” (The Gun Writer), Bob said his training philosophy is to excel in the basics, keep everything simple; master the fundamentals; and, don’t out run your headlights. Imagine that an elite Special Forces operator is teaching and stressing the same fundamentals we teach novice shooters – sight alignment, sight-picture, trigger control. And, don’t be so concerned with speed that you cannot see where you are going. So simple but yet so eloquent…eye opening.
This experience got me to thinking. Perhaps back to the basics is applicable in areas other than on the range. We are bombarded with so much going on in the world that is negative. Politics, pandemic, crime, economy and more have made day to day life so complicated. Perhaps we need to get back to the basics: back to our core, essential, and fundamental values.
Now I suppose that it is up to each one of us to define for ourselves what are our basic core values. I would suggest that we start with “faith, hope, and love.” But the greatest of these is love”.
Perhaps back to the basics should be our new year’s resolution.
