Do You Know Your Serial Number?

Do you know the serial number for your firearm?  Too many people don’t have it recorded anywhere. Things happen even with the most responsible gun owners.  This information is critical.

In the event your firearm gets lost or stolen, you should immediately report the loss or theft to local law enforcement.  When you report the incident, the agency taking the report will need the manufacturer, model, and serial number so that the firearm can be entered into NCIC as stolen.

Entering the firearm into NCIC facilitates two things.  First, if the firearm is recovered, you have a good possibility of getting it returned to you.  Secondly, when a law enforcement agency recovers a firearm and learns it is stolen, they may be able to charge the possessor with the crime of possession of a stolen firearm.  They may even be able to solve other property related crimes.  It gives law enforcement additional tools to use against criminals.

All of us have that file where we keep our birth certificates, marriage certificates, and other important papers.  Make a list of the serial numbers on your firearms and put that list with those important papers.  If you are tech savvy, you may want to create a spreadsheet which is stored on the cloud (i.e. iCloud or Dropbox).  Those electronic files can be accessed anywhere at any time from any device if needed.

Hey John! I can’t tell you just how excited I am to tell people that I took your class. I enjoy sharing lots of things with lots of people but I especially enjoy telling ladies, especially, how empowering it feels to know what you are doing when you handle a firearm and to be able to shoot confidently and accurately. Thank you for your expertise. You are an amazing teacher!
