When I was a young fella, I was really good with a tactical shotgun. But now that I am in my 50’s, I don’t want any part of the recoil from a short- barreled shotgun shooting heavy buckshot and slug loads. And, that’s ok.
I have recently had several senior citizen students. They brought their small frame 5 shot revolvers that they have had for many years to class. They had not shot them in many years either (that’s not ok but is a blog post for another day). They quickly found that as they aged, their hand strength changed and perhaps some arthritis developed. Perhaps through some accident or just life they developed some other physical challenge. For whatever reason, they were no longer able to operate and manage the recoil of that small frame revolver. And, that’s ok.
After class, several of the students were off to the gun store to trade the small framed revolver in for something that they were confident they could become competent, safe, and responsible. Remember in a previous blog we discussed it is better to put many smaller caliber rounds on target quickly than to be ineffective with a large caliber.
So, make sure you keep practicing regularly with your firearms. If you get to a point where you are no longer confident in your firearm, it may be time to make a change. We here at South Alabama Firearms Education are always here to help and give advice. We will even go shopping with you!
